In   1884,   a   steamer   passenger   service   was   inaugurated   within   the   Clyde   harbour.   All   the   steamers   (eventually numbering   1-12)   were   named   “Clutha”   (Gaelic   name   for   the   River   Clyde).   The   last   run   was   made   in   November 1903,   the   service   having   become   unremunerative   owing   to   the   introduction   of   the   Glasgow   subway   and   electric trams. At their zenith the steamers carried 2 ½ million passengers annually.
